The Arribes del Duero Natural Park can be appreciated from multiple viewpoints: from above at its impressive lookouts, on wheels along its paths, or from the water aboard a boat or catamaran.

Whichever way you choose, you will be able to fully appreciate the beauty of its landscapes.

Previously, we’ve shared posts about the lookout routes, the waterfalls route, or motorcycle routes. However, we haven’t yet explored the river tour, a unique and spectacular way to experience the park from the water.

Firstly, it is important to note that the Arribes del Duero is located in the provinces of Salamanca and Zamora in Spain, extending into neighbouring Portugal. The natural border formed by the Duero River is a distinctive feature of the region.

Its remarkable natural beauty has earned it protected status and recognition in the UNESCO World Network. The striking landscape contrasts between deep canyons and dramatic cliffs with the plateau covered in Mediterranean vegetation, including olive groves, vineyards, and fruit trees.

The park also hosts rich biodiversity, including species such as griffon vultures, golden eagles, Iberian lynxes, and European otters, among others.

Now, let’s focus on today’s topic: the river tour of the Arribes del Duero. What better way to appreciate this area than gliding along the waters of the Duero River?

Departure Points:

This activity is available year-round, weather permitting.

Boats depart from various points, such as Miranda do Douro in Portugal or Spanish towns like Aldeadávila de la Ribera and Fermoselle. Each offers breathtaking views as well as cultural and gastronomic experiences, including traditional local dishes.

It is recommended to arrive at the dock 10–15 minutes before departure, even with a reservation.

Boat Features:

The Arribes catamaran is a popular tourist attraction that allows visitors to explore the park’s natural beauty. The most well-known vessel, Corazón de los Arribes, has a spacious covered area with seating and an open terrace for those who wish to stay closer to nature.

It is designed to provide a comfortable and unique experience, with climate control and a green exterior to blend with the surroundings. Its motor is specially insulated to ensure the guide’s commentary is clearly heard. Safety equipment includes self-inflating life rafts, life jackets, and stabilisers for seasickness.

Cruise Duration:

Duration varies depending on departure point, route, and included activities, ranging from one to three hours, or even a full-day experience including local cuisine and wine tasting.

Itinerary:

The river tour immerses you in dramatic landscapes with granite cliffs, lush vegetation, and crystal-clear waters, offering a chance to observe aquatic life and enjoy the tranquillity of nature. Guided tours provide insights into geology, fauna, and local history.

Optional Stops:

Some cruises stop at charming riverside villages, allowing you to experience local culture and gastronomy.

Routes:

1. From Fermoselle: Departing from Bemposta dock on a small vessel (up to 30 passengers) for around 2.5 hours, visiting Fermoselle, Bemposta (Portugal), Sedim, and Picón del Diablo.

2. From Miranda do Douro: Board the larger Navío-Aula for up to 120 passengers, including a wine tasting and interactive wildlife presentation. Duration: 1–3 hours. Covered, climate-controlled, with two terraces.

3. From Vilvestre: Travel downstream for around two hours to Mieza, observing olive groves, vineyards, natural reserves, and abundant wildlife. The route passes under Mirador del Picón de Felipe and Mirador del Fraile.

The river tour is suitable for all ages and allows you to fully experience the protected ecosystem of the Arribes del Duero.
